This Lesson Category is all about Licks, Sequences and Patterns. Some of the material can be seen as an extension of the "Scales" lessons. It's a good and necessary thing to know your scales (and for the guitar not only in all keys, but also in all positions!), but nobody "improvises scales". Improvisations consist of "broken up" scales, mingling scales, scale fragments, chromatics, arpeggio's and arpeggio fragments, rests, rythmic figures and displacement, repetition, licks and cliché's, etc... Scales give you "what notes are possible" (for instance) and what notes could sound "right", but they don't tell you how to put them into practice... That's why someone needs to learn patterns, licks, cliché's sequences and so forth to build up a "vocabulary" to "talk" a certain style of playing. |
